Police have arrested four persons who broke the doors of Mahmood Gavan Madrasa in Karnataka's Bidar district and entered and performed pujas. It is a building maintained by the Department of Archaeology.

Mahmood Gavan Madrasa

The incident took place on Wednesday midnight.

At the same time, this incident took place while some people were taking the idol of a Hindu deity for immersion. However, some say that the tree in this building is worshiped twice a year.

Karnataka Additional Deputy General Police Alok Kumar told the BBC that earlier it was customary to worship a tree in the madrasa premises. The police said that they have arrested people related to this case. In order to maintain peace and security, special security arrangements have been made in the mosque in the madrasa to prevent riots during Friday prayers.

KARNATAKA TOURISM HISTORICAL BUILDING

This madrasa was built 600 years ago by Iranian businessman Mahmoud Gavan.

He went to India during the Bahmani rule, avoiding the attacks from Turk Menistan and Mongolia. India used to be the center of education. Abdul Majid Maniyar, Professor of Karnataka Central University, said that not only spiritual education was taught in this madrasa, but chemistry, geology and philosophy were also taught. The architecture of this building is similar to Indian and Islamic architecture. The 100 feet high gopuram in this madrasa is an important structure. It is called Glass Pillar because of the shiny tiles on this gopuram.

In 2005, the Department of Archeology recognized this building as a conservation building and took it over. But, locals say that the central government has not made any security arrangements for the preservation of this structure. This madrasa and mosque are a reminder of the rule of the Bahmani kingdom that ruled the Deccan region from 1424 - 1427. In the FIR registered by Madrasa Board member Mohammad Shamshuddin, the mob pushed the security personnel near the Madrasa gate and broke the lock and entered the Madrasa premises to perform prayers. The mob forced their way into the madrasa and threw saffron near the mosque gate and shouted slogans," Shamshuddin said.

In the FIR, it was said that some people were trying to disrupt the peace and harmony in the city by putting up idols and photos and shouting slogans in the Chaubara premises. These mobs are chanting anti-national slogans and inciting other religious people to chant similar slogans. They have vandalized the surroundings by throwing mud into madrasas and mosques," the complaint said. The names of those who stormed into the madrasa premises have been registered in the FIR. The police registered a case against the accused under sections 143, 147, 153, 295A and 149 of the IPC.
